Inventors at the time made improvements that enabled this to happen. Darkening chemicals were used, but only revealed themselves under the necessary light used to see the images. For this reason the images did not last.
The discovery of a substance like gelatin that could allow the images to set and stay permanently was a big leap in the evolution of cameras. But there needed to be a quickness of response to go with this new material and imaging, so a mechanical shutter was invented that could easily be triggered to capture the image desired.
It was after the first kind of film that was invented; the first instrument i.e. the camera was invented successfully. This camera developed in 19tth century was a block shaped instrument, black in color and build with identical technology that is found in its successors.
