Photography Tips - Using Nature's Light

By

If you are an experienced photographer or just an amateur who wants to learn about photography lighting, you might have noticed that many photographers capture their most amazing pictures using natural lighting. There are specifically two periods during the day when photographers can capture brilliant photos while taking advantage of nature's light. Often times photographers capture some of their best work during these time periods.

The lighting of your photographs depends heavily on the emotion of the photograph that you are trying to bring out. If you are photographing a delicate flower, then you might want to take advantage of a natural softer light, where on the other hand if you are attempting to make that same flower look like it comes from a dark and twisted world, you would definitely choose a much different light in order to make the flower appear much more harsh.

If you are going for that more softer natural looking dewy look then you will want to use one of the two time periods throughout the day to take advantage of natural light. There are two times of the day when mother nature gives us the best lighting to capture the most beautiful photographs. The first time period is in the morning and is the first half hour after the sun rises over the horizon. The next time period is the time in which the sun sets, the half hour before the sun sets, and the half hour right after the sun sets.

There are three great reasons why these particular times of day are amazing for capturing great photographs. Those reasons have to do with the color, quality and direction the natural lighting provides.

The color captured in photographs taken at these two magical times results in saturated, warm colors. This is because the amount of white light is less during these two times compared to other times of the day. Photographs taken during these times produce soft shadows and gentle tonal transitions which improves the overall quality of the photographs. Because of where the sun is located during these two time frames, photographs will emphasize shapes and textures.

One of the best times to take photographs is during the sun set. This is because the most intense display of colors occurs naturally during the 20 minutes before and after sunset. Sunrise and sunset produce different effects with lighting and at sunset the clouds will be illuminated brightening the sky. In essence the direction of the lighting has changed. During this time you can take advantage of the sky by using it as a backdrop to your photographs.

Lighting is often used in photography to enhance the quality of the image. Nature provides us with some excellent lighting every day. You can now begin to use natural lighting to capture some very intense photographs.
