Achieve Picture Perfect Returns By Using These Photo Taking Tips

By Allison Maggie Sanchez

There's no replacing great advice for someone who is entirely new to the art of photography. There are a lot of unexpected ups and downs that you all must deal with at times, but the end result can still be amazing photography. The following article contains some great ideas and tips on how you can go about getting started on the path to becoming a good photographer.

If you believe the nostalgic sentiments associated with film-based photography and would like to try your hand at doing it the old-fashioned way, pick up a film camera at a second hand store. Try getting some black and white film that has a ISO 200 rating; it is the best for all situations. After the film is developed, try getting prints on various paper types, like fiber papers.

When photographing your children, you will likely get the results you want if you allow them to be free and natural. Kids are naturally full of energy, so it is difficult to control them long enough to snap a great photograph. Have some fun instead, and capture the photos of the children in action.

Take a few pictures of vacation souveniers from your trips. You can take pictures of the places you make your purchases, or snap photos of the souvenirs in other interesting places. This will allow you to create a story behind the objects you bought as souvenirs that you will enjoy when you return home.

Try having borders on each of your pictures, even if they are natural. Not a physical frame, but one that is totally natural. If you observe all the angles and lines in your shot, you can frame them in the camera to take advantage of them and create a "natural frame." Doing so can help to improve composition.

Use shutter speeds creatively. Generally speaking, it's best to utilize the fastest shutter speed possible; however, you can get some interesting effects with a slower shutter speed (e.g. 1/30). For example, what if there is a cyclist going by? The result you get is that the cyclist is sharp but the background is horizontally streaked, expressing speed.

You are at the mercy of nature when it comes to lighting and taking a landscape photograph. Other times, it can be impossible to find a good lighting location. How do you solve this dilemma? Use software like Adobe Photoshop to add a contrasting gradient filter, which will put the lighting into balance.

Keep the settings on your camera simple. Focus on learning a single aspect of your camera's settings before moving on to the others. This allows you to experiment with the setting in different ways, and helps you get good shots without fiddling over a bunch of settings while your subject gets bored and leaves.

Use the flash on your camera when snapping pictures outside so that you can get rid of shadows that will form when you are taking pictures in bright sunlight. If you don't use it, your photographs may be too dark.

You can elevate your photography from a hobby to an art. Use these above tips to become a better photographer, and create beautiful pictures people will enjoy looking at. Test some of these ideas out, and remember, sometimes it takes numerous tries to perfect something.
